You Could Do Worse...

...than taking the time to read Donald Miller's blog entry about the perspective of a farmer. Some great questions for all of us to sort through are at the end, so don't stop too early!

Funny...I read that same article yesterday. I hadn't been to the Burnside site in a while.

Had to marinate on this one a bit, as it hit a little too close to home...but let me take a shot across the bow, just for the sake of achievers...

Does God create achievers? Think David, Solomon, The Roman Captain...

If God has gifted you in a certain area, could you be selling Him short to take the comfortable road?

If Tim Tebow reads this blog entry, and was significantly influenced by Donald Miller, he might pass on an NFL career as too much travel, or too violent, or too whatever. He'd be much safer if he pursued a career a little closer to home.

I'll also argue that Max Lucado had a pretty nice fall back position. 70 million books later doesn't suck very much at all and his family probably isn't too disappointed he was forced to make that tough choice. I mean if Max were forced to choose between his stock boy job at WalMart and the trailer for he and his, and say a $4 million speaking gig to present his thoughts - well I'm guessing Max wouldn't be too idealistic.

Don't get me wrong, I like, no love both Max Lucado AND Donald Miller.

And, this article made me think, which is good.

I'm a little sensitive on this topic as I get some barbs from some of our pastoral staff about "how much is enough?" and "keeping up with the Jones'"...and it takes every ounce of self control to reply with a "If it wasn't for the achievers in this congregation, you would be making due on 1/3 of our budget and making calls to about 14 missionaries cutting thier funding."

Thanks for allowing me to vent.
