Reason #53,303 I Enjoy Friendship With My Former Students

So, my friend Abby has a thought provoking blog entry from yesterday. Your life will be better if you read the whole thing.

Anyway, here's a snippet:

"But I am learning that your twenties (or at least, mine) have and will continue to be a time of listening. Of trying things and seeing if they work, of learning discipline and theology and figuring out who I am, and who God is. And of making real, real decisions. The end goal is not to get to a career, though that might happen. The goal is to walk each day with Jesus. It is also to become more like Jesus, and understand more how I am built to worship Him."

Now the gist of the entry is that she'd had a conversation with an acquaintance that gave her some advice about enjoying the roller coaster that life gives us. Now, again, if you haven't already, go read the article.

Anyway, I'm finding that what she's discovering about her twenties, I'm re-discovering in my forties. Or at least experiencing those things in new ways...

...am I alone in this?

Can't Think Of A Thing That Can Ruin My Mood Today!

Give It A Shot

On last week's episode of How I Met Your Mother the characters (all of whom live in Manhattan) were having a debate. Robyn, a morning news show anchor, was very excited because a friend had spotted Woody Allen and texted her to come see him.

The other four characters (Ted, Marshall, Lilly & Barney) all laughed and said something along the lines of, "You've lived here 6 years and never seen Woody Allen? Even folks on vacation have run into Woody Allen!" They then tried to create a list of things that you've done/experienced that make you a "real New Yorker."

Among them were things like "stolen a cab from someone who had it first" to "crying on the subway and not caring what everyone else thought" to "smashing a cockroach with your bare hands in a restaurant."

Since I've never lived in NYC, I thought it'd be pretty fun to come up with a list of things that you do/experience that make you a genuine "Flower Mounder."

Here's a few I came up with:

Actually driven visitors past the actual "Flower Mound."
Waited in the drop-off/pick-up lane at an elementary school, middle school AND high school.
Attended the Mound Showdown and/or Battle of the Axe.
Tried to explain directions to get somewhere and not exactly sure which name to use for "Main Street." (e.g., "You'll need to turn off 1171...er, Cross Timbers...er, Main...I'm not exactly sure what the signs say at that intersection.")
Talked about some restaurant or shop you'd like to try out at Parker Square but never actually been there.
Planned on making a left turn anywhere lately only to find that lane blocked (it wasn't yesterday) by orange cones, forcing you to go all the way around the building.
If you've ever pointed out Matt Chandler to anyone.
You've actually used the phrase "Master Plan."
You owe people a pick-up or drop-off at DFW because they did you a solid two months ago.
You've had to get on the city web-site because you can't remember if the bulk trash day is this week or next week.

Well...that's 10 I could come up with. What about you?

The last time I laughed in a similar fashion to something a teenager said was when one of the guys in my senior guys small group said, "I wish I could get married. Then I can have sex whenever I want!"
